Just 3 months after its 2.11 release, Gluent once again delivers a giant leap forward for companies who are continuing to embrace the world of hybrid data. Providing a faster route to cloud integration and a higher level of self-sufficiency, Gluent’s 3.0 improves customer flexibility with support for two of Amazon’s premier cloud services, Amazon EMR and Amazon S3. The new release also introduces certification for use with Oracle Database 18c, including Oracle 18c XE. Gluent has also released the Gluent Advisor Portal, a self-service application for customers to generate and view Advisor reports. This release also sees a number of functional and performance improvements to Gluent’s products and features.

Easier Cloud Integration with Amazon EMR and S3

Amazon EMR is a managed cluster platform for running big data frameworks such as Hadoop on AWS. Gluent 3.0 provides full support for Hadoop on Amazon EMR, offering customers a broader range of opportunities for adopting Hadoop in a structured cloud environment. Customers can offload relational data directly to Amazon EMR and then present this and other existing EMR-resident data back to their relational databases. Customers without on-premises Hadoop infrastructure now have a much simpler path to deploying Gluent Data Platform to leverage the data virtualization benefits of offloading data to Hadoop, but without the administrative overhead of managing a Hadoop cluster.

Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) is a Cloud storage service that enables any volume of data to be stored on managed infrastructure. With Gluent’s 3.0 release, customers can now choose Amazon S3 as a storage option for all or some of the data that is offloaded to Hadoop by Gluent Offload Engine, without loss of functionality. This provides customers with a range of storage options. For example, customers can benefit from the storage scalability that is offered with Amazon S3 or adopt an ILM-like strategy by offloading little-used data to S3 and more-commonly used data to HDFS.

Gluent Advisor Portal Provides Self Service Analysis tools

Gluent’s Advisor Portal provides an outstanding visual representation of a database’s offload potential and customers gain great insights from their Advisor reports. Gluent 3.0 introduces the Gluent Advisor Portal, a web-application that enables customers to upload their Advisor data (extracted by Gluent’s Advisor Data Extractor) and generate, view and download rich HTML reports. Customers can maintain their set of databases in Gluent Advisor Portal and retain a full history of the Advisor reports they generate.

Support for Oracle 18c Support Extends Customer Options

With the 3.0 release, Gluent Data Platform is certified for use with Oracle Database 18c (including the XE port). Together with the support for Amazon EMR also announced, the certification for Oracle’s latest database platform extends the range of RDBMS and Hadoop vendor configurations that are supported by Gluent’s products. With the expanding range of vendor products supported by Gluent, customers’ vendor choices are less of a barrier to adopting and benefiting from Gluent’s data virtualization technology.

Functional and Performance Improvements Provide Better Control

Functional improvements continue to be offered across the Gluent product set. It is now possible to reset or move the high-water mark for range-partitioned tables regardless of how they have been offloaded, enabling customers to decouple the choices of how many partitions to offload and how many partitions to read from the RDBMS or Hadoop. In addition, the fine-grained control over Hadoop stats collection during offloads or presents has been extended to include Incremental Update and Schema Sync, completing the range of Gluent functionality that can benefit from this added flexibility. Finally, several efficiencies have been achieved with the data verification phase of an offload or Incremental Update compaction, reducing the volume of data that needs to be scanned for most scenarios and improving the performance of this critical operation.

As with previous releases, the 3.0 release includes several performance improvements. Parallel degree properties are copied to hybrid objects when tables are offloaded, improving the performance of hybrid queries involving parallel tables. In addition, several meta-queries issued during an offload operation have been optimized and stabilized, providing greater performance and predictability for standard offload steps.

About Gluent Data Platform

Gluent Data Platform keeps enterprise RDBMS relevant in the new hybrid world. For example, now applications can query data that was originated in Microsoft SQL Server as if the data lived directly in Oracle. Gluent provides a data virtualization layer between traditional databases, cloud storage and Hadoop that accelerates time to insight and eliminates data duplication and sprawl, and allows customers to preserve their investments in their RDBMS platforms while leveraging the power, scalability, and elasticity of private and public based clouds. In addition to Oracle’s relational database system, enterprise customers with Microsoft RDBMS’ can now immediately use the full power of Hadoop platforms either in their own local data center or in the cloud for linear scalability of their hybrid data platform.
