With minor release 4.2, Gluent continues to put security at the heart of its operation. With this technical release, Gluent delivers new features that continue its track record of increasing product flexibility with each new generation. Release 4.2 adds new security options, extended support for both frontend and backend partition schemes and additional Google BigQuery features, together with a range of general product improvements.

This release sees a major upgrade to the core Python and dependent software used by Gluent Offload Engine, to provide access to the latest features and security options. Additionally, support has been extended for Oracle Wallet, which can now be used for all Gluent Offload Engine and Gluent Query Engine interactions with Oracle Database, removing the need to set any basic user/pass connection credentials. Users of Google BigQuery can also take advantage of support for Customer Managed Encryption Keys.
Release 4.2 extends support for both frontend (RDBMS) partitioning schemes and backend (Data Model Virtualization) partitioning schemes. All offloading schemes now work with Oracle tables that are range partitioned by VARCHAR2. For backend partitioning, this release introduces extensible synthetic partitioning with the Partition Functions feature. This feature gives users the ability to define their own custom synthetic partitioning scheme when offloading data that would otherwise not be suitable for backend partitioning (such as strings or very large numeric data). This creates a wide range of Data Model Virtualization capabilities that Gluent Data Platform provides to decouple the frontend and backend platforms and exploit their individual strengths.
Support for Google BigQuery was introduced in 4.0, and Gluent Data Platform has continued to track new features to allow customers to get the best out of the platform. The 4.2 release introduces support for the BIGNUMERIC data type ― both generally and as a source for synthetic partitioning ― and clustering improvements. Support has also been added for Customer Managed Encryption Keys to provide more security options when connecting Gluent Data Platform to their Google Cloud Platform environments.
With every release, Gluent continues to add a number of product improvements to Gluent Data Platform for increased functionality, flexibility, security and performance. In addition to those described above, the 4.2 release of Gluent Data Platform supports longer Oracle Database identifiers ― please note that the limit was increased from 30 to 128 characters in Oracle Database 12c Release 2. Furthermore, Connect has a number of added and improved installation and configuration checks to ensure that the operation of Gluent Data Platform is a simple and seamless experience.
