On May 25th, 2017 Gluent and Cloudera hosted a free introductory level course for RDBMS professionals who wanted to get a better understanding of Hadoop and the benefits it brings to the enterprise. The course was led by Michael Rainey of Gluent and Sreekanth Krishnavajjala of Cloudera, with a special appearance by Tanel Poder of Gluent.
With over 70 people in attendance, the day began with registration, coffee, some networking and catching up with friends and colleagues, but soon after, the course was underway.
The course started with an overview of Hadoop and its history including a section that busted many myths and pre-conceived notions about Hadoop and Big Data.
The instructors then took the attendees through comparing and contrasting how Hadoop and RDBMS systems handle subjects such as high availability, backup & recovery, data storage, SQL processing, system monitoring and day-to-day operations. The day closed with several case studies, providing attendees a first-hand look at how Hadoop solutions have been built in the real world.
Followed by a Q&A session and some more networking, the day concluded with a few after session drinks and lively banter.
Gluent and Cloudera will be bringing this session to other cities across the US. Current plans include St. Louis, Missouri and Houston, Texas (dates to be announced).
